Dr. John Thoppil of River Place OB/GYN has been named one of Austin Monthly’s Top Austin Doctors 2018.

“It is very validating to be recognized for what you do,” Thoppil said.

This annual recognition is an effort to let locals know who they can trust to handle their health needs. The doctors chosen are selected by Castle Connolly Medical Ltd., a healthcare research and information company. They look at how well the doctors perform their practices and how they treat their patients, choosing those who exceed in both.

“I was shocked when they asked me to do the cover,” he said.

Following in the footsteps of his parents, Thoppil, who is from Killeen, chose to pursue a career in medicine. Becoming a board certified obstetrician gynecologist, he already has quite a number of academic, professional and patient-drive awards.

Originally Thoppil worked in Cedar Park as a hospital employed doctor, but felt that there needed to be more done in the terms of women’s health services. He started River Place OB/GYN three years ago with a goal of helping the community and caring for others. He wishes to provide a more personal experience for his patients, rather than just treating them as another client.

Thoppil is a strong advocate for women’s health issues and currently serves as the section chair for the American College of Obstetrician Gynecologists.

Thoppil is an active member of the Austin community, and his wife, Nimmi, works as a pediatrician in Travis County. The couple lives in Steiner Ranch and their son, John Jr. is a student at River Ridge Elementary.
