The Vandegrift Viper football team beat Vista Ridge 36-7 at home on Friday to go 5-0 overall and 3-0 in district standings.
“It’s hard to come out and limit somebody to one touchdown in a 6A football game,” said Drew Sanders, VHS head football coach. “We’re proud of our guys, they had a great game. They came out and did exactly what we wanted them to do.”
The Vipers put up 36 points in the first half including touchdowns by Trey Mongauzy (9 yards), Brendan Bennett (72 yards), Beau Dawson (12 yards), Dru Dawson (3 yards), and Reese Watson (8 yards).
“Dru’s doing a great job. Took a few big hits and jumped right back up,” Sanders said. “I’m also appreciative of the offensive line and how they give him time.”
Vista Ridge got their only touchdown in the 3rd quarter.
“(Defensively) we had a couple of key stops early. They were doing what we expected,” Sanders said. “We didn’t get turnovers like we needed, but still we’re playing tough defense.”
Looking ahead, Sanders will prepare his team this week for the next game.
“I know (Round Rock) is a very good team and supposedly they have a very good quarterback and a great offense,” Sanders said.
The Vipers play Round Rock at Dragon Stadium on Friday, Oct. 5.
