The Vandegrift varsity volleyball team pulled out a thrilling victory against Vista Ridge on Friday night at home putting the Lady Vipers in a three-way tie in district standings with VRHS and Round Rock. The team is 7-2 in district while VRHS and RRHS are 8-2, since VHS had a first-round bye.
All three of Friday’s sets were neck and neck but VHS came out on top: 26-24, 30-28, 25-22.
“Vista Ridge is a very low-error team. They play incredible defense on top of being a team that is very strong on serve receive,” said Melissa Southall, VHS volleyball head coach. “Our girls knew coming into this match that they would need to earn every point.”
Vandegrift had both offense and defense working hard all night. Offensively there were big kills from juniors Annie Stadthaus and Brynne Wright in connection with junior setter Delaney Dilfer.
“Defensively, I think my libero, Egadi Santos played lights out defensive along with fellow sophomore Audrey Green,” Southall said. “It was an exciting match and a true testament to the whole teams’ work (last) week. We had a strategy and the girls executed it. I’m really proud of all of them.”
This week the Lady Vipers play away games at Leander on Tuesday and Round Rock on Friday, Oct. 5. The next home game is Stony Point at Vandegrift on Oct. 9 with a 6:30 p.m. start.
