The Vandegrift girls cross country team placed sixth overall, Jordan Mathis came in with the eighth fastest time, and Anthony Monte was 19th at the UIL Class 6A State Meet on Saturday, Nov. 3 at Old Settlers Park in Round Rock.

“I’m very proud of our kids. They’ve earned every bit of this and it couldn’t have happened to a better group of individuals,” said Colin Sully, Vandegrift cross country head coach. “That being said, we’re not done. Our goal is to get both squads to state every year and perform at the highest level. The talent and desire to work hard is there in addition to the support of the community to get us all the way to the top. Vandegrift is fully capable of having a state winning cross country team and we will get there.”

The Vipers qualified for state at the Class 6A regional meet in Dallas on Oct. 22. The Vandegrift girls’ team finished second overall, while Viper junior Anthony Monte (14:52.89) placed third overall.

Jordan Mathis (17:01.34) finished third overall for the Vandegrift girls at the regional meet and her sister Taylor Mathis (18:03.75) came in the seventh. Gemma Goddard (18:30.23) finished 15th, Emma Saia (18:37.84) finished 18th while Brianna Garza (19:05.66), Margaret McElmurry (19:24.00) and Carolyn Presley (19:35.98) capped off a successful day for the Vipers in Dallas.
