The Vandegrift cross country team is heading to state after the Nov. 10 Region IV-6A meet in Corpus Christi.
“I am really proud of our kids,” said Colin Sully, VHS head cross country coach.
The VXC girls, led by Senior Emma Saia (4th overall) finished in 1st place, beating their nearest competitor by 40 points, Sully said. The VXC boys, led by Sophomore Kevin Sanchez (5th overall), finished in 4th place, their best 6A regionals finish in school history.
Sanchez and the girls team will compete at UIL 6A State on Tuesday, Nov. 24 at 2:30 p.m. and 3:15 p.m. at Old Settlers Park in Round Rock.
Coach Sully said the Vipers showed extreme discipline and patience in the months leading up to on-campus practice by running on their own or in small groups.
“The success we are having now is directly related to their commitment to their sport during the time before we could meet in-person,” Sully said. “We are grateful to have been able to have this season and I’m looking forward to watching them represent our school in a big way at the 6A state meet.”
