Drew Sanders, Vandegrift head football coach, shares comments prior to the home opener vs. Cedar Park at Monroe Memorial Stadium on Aug. 27. The Vipers have earned three district titles and six playoff wins over the past three years. This week’s non-conference game is an annual favorite against CPHS, where students in Four Points used to attend prior to VHS’ founding in 2009.
- How do you view opponent CPHS?
Cedar Park is a worthy opponent and one of our biggest rivals. It’s always a great game between the TWolves and the Vipers. They are always loaded with talent and play hard and are the perfect opponent to prepare us for district success.
- Will this be a difficult game given how far they went in the playoffs last year?
They are always good, no matter what year, so they always present a formidable challenge. But we schedule good teams on purpose to make us better and prepare for district and playoff success.
- What do you expect will be the biggest Viper advantage?
Our home field advantage will always help the Vipers as we always play well at home. We hope our fans show up and stay loud the entire game.
- What do you expect will be the most challenging for the Vipers?
It’s always interesting to see the challenges that come up every Friday night. It’s always the team that can make the least mistakes and take advantage when the other team makes a mistake that wins. So hopefully the Vipers will seize the opportunities that will be given during the game. I do know we will play hard and with discipline for four quarters and that usually gives you a chance to win.
