In the late afternoon of September 16, 2021, deputies recovered the body of a man from the area of Lake Travis where a swimmer was reportedly last seen on August 7, 2021. The decedent was located via sonar and recovered from a depth of 110 feet. Locating the missing man and making the recovery was dangerous and challenging due to brush, trees, and a steep ledge in that area.
At 6:53 pm on August 7, 2021, deputies and other agencies responded to a report of a missing swimmer in the main channel of Lake Travis, between Starnes Island and North Shore. According to witnesses, two men were treading water, waiting for friends to get off a large floating tube, so they could get on. One of the men, who was not wearing a life jacket, was last seen several feet from the tube. Witnesses said a wave went over the swimmer and he never resurfaced.
An autopsy was conducted the morning of September 17, 2021 and results, including positive identification, are pending.
A total of ten swimmers have been reported missing on Lake Travis this year. All ten have been recovered. TCSO continues to remind swimmers and boaters to make safety a priority and wear their life jackets.
