With its field production “Juliet Letters”, the Vandegrift band and Vision Dance Co. placed 2nd in both the UIL 6A State Marching Band Contest, and the Bands Of America San Antonio Super Regional Championship.
The 6A state contest was November 8 and 9, and BOA was held a few days earlier on November 5 and 6. The VHS program’s 386 students traveled to San Antonio as both competitions were held at the Alamodome. The Vipers performed the show four times in five days.
“Receiving a UIL state medal is a big deal,” said Mike Howard, director of bands at VHS. Silver is the highest achievement in 6A marching for the VHS program.
There were 246 Texas 6A marching bands that started the UIL advancement process a month ago. After five rounds of competition, the number of bands was reduced to the finals competition of the top 12 bands in 6A.
“To have our students be recognized as the 2nd place silver medalist in all of class 6A is a testament to their hard work and dedication,” Howard said.
For the BOA Super Regional, the band finished in second place with a score of 95.200 in the finals round. In the preliminary round, VHS placed third and won the Outstanding Visual Performance Caption.
“I continue to be honored and grateful to have the opportunity to work with the band and Vision students at Vandegrift High School,” Howard said. “What a special few days for all involved!”
