Vipers come home with National Cheerleaders Association awards
Vandegrift High School cheerleaders, under the direction of coaches Brianna Roughton and Claire McCutcheon came home with several team and individual awards from the National Cheerleaders Association camp held August 1-4 in Galveston.
The Vandegrift varsity cheer team received the prestigious “Herkie Award” which was voted on by the NCA staff and given to the top all-around program at camp that exemplifies unity, spirit, and leadership.
The varsity squad placed first in the large Varsity Chant competition. The junior varsity squad received the Stunt Safety Award. Both teams received NCA bids to the National Championship competition, given to squads that exemplify competitive cheerleading ability.
“Each year we are thrilled to return to NCA camp and this year was no exception. As a team we set high expectations and goals for ourselves going into camp, and I’m pleased to say that we accomplished each goal we set. This wouldn’t have been possible without the cheerleader’s positive attitudes and elite talent. To say I’m proud would be an understatement.” said Coach Roughton.
Seven senior varsity cheerleaders were invited to apply for NCA Instructors. Congratulations to Ava Coulter, Kathryn Frazier, Julia Jennings, Lauren Jones, Alina Kudrick, Kaytlin Krant and Faith Runyan. They were chosen by NCA staff for their superior cheerleading skills and leadership potential. Additionally, Varsity captain, Ava Coulter, received the individual leadership award, given to three individuals in the entire camp who exemplify strong leadership abilities.
Seventeen varsity cheerleaders and 14 JV cheerleaders were also named to the coveted NCA All-American team for displaying superior techniques in the following areas: jumps, tumbling, stunting, crowd involvement, and motion technique.
“Our cheer program is enthusiastic and ready to support our Vandegrift Vipers this season and continue strengthen and enhance the program throughout the year” Roughton said.
