More than halfway into the year the 2022-2023 Vandegrift Viper wrestlers continue to work and get better match by match and competition by competition, according to head coach Paul Muck.
A very battle tested team has a season record of 12 – 1 in dual meets and has placed 1st in three of their six tournaments, Muck shared.
At the Centex Tournament on January 7, at the Austin ISD Delco Center, the Vipers outpaced their closest competitor by over 100 points. But probably their most impressive showing so far this year occurred over the New Years holiday when the Vipers traveled up to Dallas at Allen HS and competed in the Outlaw Tournament, Muck said.
“This is traditionally dubbed the ‘toughest tournament in Texas’, as it has 40 schools from Texas and five different surrounding states,” Muck said. “The Vipers placed 4th, which is their highest showing at this tournament in 10 years.”
The Vipers, led by senior team captains Rex Jacops, Carter Taylor, and Zachary Hampton have eight state ranked wrestlers and a team of over 60 wrestlers. The Vipers travel back up to Dallas on Jan. 20 to compete in the prestigious State Dual Tournament and then look to start the “road to the state” with the district 13-6a tournament on Feb. 1 at Vandegrift HS.
