The Vandegrift boys soccer team makes school history by becoming the 6A regional champions for the first time. The team is now just two wins away from the state championship title.
The Vipers face Lewisville Flower Mound in the state semi final game on Friday, April 12 at 7:30 p.m. in Georgetown at Birkelbach Field for a chance to advance to the state championship game on Saturday, April 13 at 6:30 p.m.
The season started with a tough district campaign. The Vipers were crowned district champions for only the 3rd time in school history.
“The boys moved onto playoffs looking to set a tone, one game at a time,” shared Jonathan Winship, VHS boys soccer head coach.
After incredible games versus Akins and Brandeis, the boys faced state favorites Bowie in a clash of titans.
“The game went into overtime and in the last three minutes, Emmy Aranda scored a banger free kick to send the boys to the regional tournament,” Winship shared.
More history was made at the regional tournament in San Antonio last weekend. The boys defeated S.A Harlan in penalty kicks and then Edinburg North 3-0 to become regional champions and qualify for the state tournament.
The boys soccer team once made it to the regional tournament as a 5A school but lost in the first round.
The Vipers currently have an overall record of 22-2-2 going into the state semi final game where Winship says, “they will look to make more history!”
