Vandegrift football beat Steele 49-35 on November 29 at the Alamodome to advance to the UIL 6A Division II Quarterfinal Championship vs. Harlan of San Antonio. The 12-1 Vipers meet the 12-1 Hawks on Friday, Dec. 6 at the Texas State University’s UFCU Stadium in San Marcos. Kickoff is at 7:30 p.m. and the fan base will be wearing black.

Drew Sanders, VHS head football coach and athletic coordinator, answers a few questions about how the Vipers are preparing for the next round of playoffs.

1) Share a few comments about the playoffs and what the Vipers are facing on

December 6 vs Harlan at UFCU Stadium in San Marcos?

This playoff run has been great for sure, especially after our quick exit last year in the playoffs. What a solid win last week vs Steele, one of the top teams in the state, the type of win that gives a program like ours the confidence to continue our deep playoff run. This is the 4th time in 5 years to have reached the fourth round of the playoffs or

beyond.

One of the things we believe in here at Vandegrift is in the acronym “E.T.W.” (expect to win), in the same fashion, this is now the yearly expectation for this program and that’s a testament to the hard work and dedication of our players, the coaching staff and our community.

This week’s match up will be a tough one, Harlan is playing with a lot of confidence after hard fought wins over Dripping Springs and New Braunfels Canyon. They pride themselves on being physical, and on film you can tell they are a hard nosed and scrappy football team, but I have no doubt the Vipers will be up to the task.

2) How are you preparing your Viper team to face the Hawks?

We are preparing to face an offense with a lot of talent at the skill positions, with an offensive line that plays hard with extreme effort. On the defensive side of the ball, they have been successful all year with a multitude of different pressures and matched with a secondary

that plays well within their scheme. Obviously, everyone at this time of year is a very good team.

3) What are the biggest challenges for the Vipers?

We are facing a good football team, you don’t get to the 4th round of the playoffs by accident. The team that is the most consistent overall, plays great special teams and makes the least number of mistakes will win this football game and move onto the State Semi-Finals.

4) What are the details to go to, listen to or watch the game?

This is a blackout game and we want all of our fans attending wearing black! The game is a 7:30 p.m. kickoff at UFCU Stadium, the football stadium on the campus of Texas State University at 1100 Aquarena Springs Dr., San Marcos, TX 78666.
