River Place group celebrates 25 years of Thanksgiving together

The River Place Thanksgiving Turkey Bowl 2024 marked the 25 season.

This Thanksgiving marked the 25th anniversary of the Annual River Place Turkey Bowl, a beloved tradition that has brought families and neighbors together since its founding in 1999 by longtime resident Dennis Upah. What began as a simple idea to unite the River Place community has grown into a cherished event that now spans generations.

The Turkey Bowl features a fun and spirited touch football game between the “geezers” (parents) and the “whippersnappers” (kids). Over the years, the game has become much more than a competition — it’s a celebration of family, community, and tradition.

Upah added: “My son was 8 when we started this tradition and now he’s 33!”

From its inception, the Turkey Bowl’s charm has been enhanced by playful poems written each year, capturing the excitement and camaraderie of the game. Early champions of the event, like Tom Radack, helped spread the word and engage families, ensuring its growth and lasting impact on the neighborhood.

Held every Thanksgiving morning at 10:30 a.m. at Sun Tree Park, the Turkey Bowl is a testament to the strong bonds within River Place. This family-friendly event is a wonderful way for both longtime and new residents to connect, laugh, and enjoy the spirit of the holiday.

Upah passed the reins several years ago to longtime River Place resident Alan Mayer. As the Turkey Bowl enters its next 25 years, organizers are eager to welcome even more of River Place’s younger families and their kids to join the fun and keep this vibrant tradition alive.

“So, mark your calendars for next Thanksgiving and be part of the game where touchdowns and memories are made,” Mayer shared. “Let’s keep the Turkey Bowl tradition and our community thriving!”
