Vandegrift band & Vision Dance are Grand National Champions

The Vandegrift Viper band and Vision Dance Company was named the Bands of America Grand National Champions last weekend in Indianapolis with its 2019 field production, “Aria Queen of the Night”. 

“Their culminating performance at the Grand National finals was one of the most outstanding displays by high school students that I have ever witnessed,” said Mike Howard, VHS director of bands. “Being named Bands of America National Champions was just icing on the cake of an already terrific season.”

VHS Vipers finish playoffs at home vs Klein Collins

This time around, Vandegrift’s second-half surge wasn’t quite enough.

Despite scoring 14 unanswered points in the fourth quarter for the second straight week, the Vipers couldn’t overcome a four-touchdown deficit in their 28-14 loss to Klein Collins in the area round of the playoffs on Nov. 22.

Biology teacher gets Change Our School award

The Vandegrift Viper football players swelled in the hallway, a strained murmur jumping from person to person. The hall went quiet at the coach’s request, but when Troy Bruce stepped out of his classroom, it exploded with cheers.

The football team honored Bruce, AP biology teacher at VHS, with the Change Our School Award on Oct. 28. Bruce collected the most votes this year from both players and coaches as the best example of an involved teacher.

VHS volleyball ends season as regional quarter finalist

After Monday’s close, 3-2 loss to the Woodlands, the Vandegrift Lady Viper volleyball team ends its season by making school history by going deeper into the playoffs than any other VHS 6A volleyball team. 

“We ended our season with the strongest ever playoff run for VHS volleyball in 6A, finishing Regional Quarter Finalist,” said Melissa Southall, head volleyball coach.   

Annie Stadthaus had a commanding game with 28 kills and Delaney Dilfer led the team in assists on Nov. 11 at Bryan High School.
