Travis County buys 94-acre tract in Grandview for preserve land, visitor center for $19.5 million

Former SAS site off Wilson Parke  to host exhibits, educational programs

A year ago, SAS Institute Inc. had rezoned about 94 acres of its undeveloped property off Wilson Parke Avenue near RM 620 to make it more attractive for potential buyers. Travis County ended up buying the property recently and will make it into a Visitor Center for the Balcones Canyonlands Preserve.

Last month, Travis County purchased the former SAS Institute property located off RM 620 at Wilson Parke Avenue, with plans for the grounds to serve the public.

According to Public Information Officer Hector Nieto, part of the tract’s existing 3-story office building will be transformed into a Visitor Center for the Balcones Canyonlands Preserve, or BCP, which is partly managed by Travis County.

Strawberry Hill makes its mark in Four Points

Strawberry Hill has grown from a spot for lake homes to a full- edged community over the past  ve decades. The Strawberry Hill neighborhood has emerged over the last several decades to what it today — a close-knit and caring community where many residents have expansive Lake Travis views.  

Located west of Steiner Ranch and adjacent to St. Luke’s on the Lake Episcopal Church, Strawberry Hill has roughly four dozen lots with 26 homes and some under construction now. The community erected a sign in January 2017 at its entrance off of RM 620.

Former Vandegrift student finds success in NASCAR Truck Series

Austin Wayne Self, who grew up in the Four Points area, is a professional stock car racer who drives No. 22 Chevrolet Silverado for AM Racing.

Though Texas is most often known as a high school football powerhouse, one former Vandegrift and Canyon Ridge student found another calling — stock car racing. 

Austin Wayne Self lived in Austin for the first 18 years of his life before moving to North Carolina to pursue his racing career. He attended Vandegrift for his freshman year in high school, then switched to homeschool.
