Very few people can say that a boat is named in honor of them and Phil Wilson of River Place is one of those people.

The Texas Department of Transportation welcomed its newest ferry in its Port Aransas fleet with a public dedication of the Phil Wilson on Aug. 20.

“I was very honored and humbled by this recognition,” Wilson said. “TxDOT is respected worldwide and being able to lead it was something I will always treasure.”

The cause of Heidy Arteaga’s death was finally determined more than three months after the local mother-of-four, who was expecting her fifth child, passed away at age 40.

Heidy died on May 7 of a rare disease called lymphocytic myocarditis, said Anthony Arteaga, her husband of eight years who lives in Four Points. Their unborn daughter, Chloe Nicole Arteaga, also died that morning.

Triggered by a virus, Heidy’s heart was inflamed and the swelling caused her heart to beat unusually fast, so fast that it stopped, Arteaga explained. He found out from the coroner two weeks ago.

Steiner Cleaners hit again on Labor Day

Karl Schulte gets a phone call this morning before 7 a.m. His employee at Steiner Cleaners was pulling into a parking spot in front of the store and in her headlights saw a burglar rushing away in a gray/blue SUV.

The burglar smashed the front door — like what happened just eight days earlier — and drove a mid-sized Chevrolet, like an Equinox, which was an older model, maybe six years old or so, Schulte said.

They drove out of the Steiner Ranch shopping center taking the road next to Lakeside Pizza & Grill. In the process of leaving the center, they did not have their headlights on and nearly ran into a Lake Travis Fire Rescue firefighter, who was jogging. He confirmed the make and model of the vehicle, Schulte said.

“It’s aggravating at this point,” said Schulte, who lives in River Place. “They didn’t get anything. We moved things around.”

The attempted burglary happened around 6:45 a.m. on Labor Day Sept. 3.  By 9 a.m. the door was replaced and again the cost, like last time, was around $650. Continue reading

As soon as the final whistle blew Friday night at Gupton Stadium, the far wall of white made up of Vandegrift players, students and fans exploded.

The Vipers beat Leander ISD rival Cedar Park 29-13 for the second time in the nine-year history of the rivalry. Vandegrift last beat the Timberwolves in 2014, the last time Cedar Park lost a regular season game.

“They talk a lot about Black Rain, but I’m very impressed with the Vandegrift defense tonight,” Vandegrift head coach Drew Sanders said. “Our defense showed up to play. We’ve got a fantastic defensive line and we’ve got six guys that can play at a high level and we rotated them all night. We didn’t get tired.”
