Zoning commission flirts with stalling Champion project

Opponents of the Champion tract development had yet another opportunity to air their grievances against the proposed multifamily development July 17.

Their efforts to stall the project were nearly successful due to low attendance at the Zoning and Platting Commission meeting as well as a tussle between commissioners and city staff about the commission’s role in the matter.

Although City Council has already approved the controversial zoning changes and a slew of ordinance waivers, the proposed 300-unit apartment complex still had to get approval from the commission on its site plan.

Hill Country Bible to build on hilltop at front of Steiner

Nearly 200 people participated in Hill Country Bible Church’s groundbreaking ceremony on July 29 in Steiner Ranch.

Hill Country Bible Church hosted a groundbreaking ceremony on Sunday for its new 25,000-square-foot campus on a hilltop near the main entrance of Steiner Ranch.  

“We’re on one of the highest hills in Steiner Ranch and the lake area. More than 20,000 cars a day will see the cross, which will be a testimony to this community,” said Tim Hawks, HCBC Lakeline pastor.

Retired principal Sullivan reflects on time at CRMS

In 2004, then new Canyon Ridge Principal Susan Sullivan welcomed students and teachers to Leander ISD’s fifth middle school. CRMS opened its doors to just over 500 students. Hill Country News

Not long before summer vacation began, Susan Sullivan announced her retirement as Canyon Ridge Middle School principal. Her 14-year tenure at the helm of CRMS in Steiner Ranch touched the lives of thousands and thousands of local students and their families. For the first time in many years, Sullivan is not preparing for the new school year and has handed that torch off to the new principal. But as a resident of Steiner, she’ll still be around and continue to be part of the local community.

Galaxy Cafe set for February opening in Steiner

Austin chain to be kid- and dog-friendly

Although Four Points residents will have to wait about seven months for its opening, Galaxy Cafe co-founder and co-owner Jay Bunda is banking on the eatery being worth the wait.

The Austin-based institution is set to open mid-February in the Quinlan Crossing Shopping Center at 5145 RM 620, Building C, Austin, the former site of Zack’s American Bistro that closed March 9.

Bunda said he is partnering with Chris Courtney for the fourth location of the casual eatery that has sites on West Lynn and in Northwest Hills and South Austin. The Steiner Ranch location will replace Galaxy Cafe’s site in the Triangle area of Austin that closed April 15.
