On a recent Monday afternoon, long-time River Place resident Gary Chapel said he was driving down Treasure Island Drive when he came around a curve to suddenly find a golf cart being operated by a teen boy with two other children on board. The vehicle was driving on the wrong side of the road, he said.

“He clearly wasn’t paying attention,” Chapel said of the golf cart driver he thought was not yet 16 years old. “So I had to brake and then I started flashing my lights. Then, he swerved over to the proper side of the road.”

Former tennis pro turns coach in Austin

Once a professional tennis player, Brian MacPhie is now giving back to the game of tennis in Austin.

MacPhie previously played on the Association of Tennis Professionals World Tour for almost 15 years, from 1993 – 2005. On the tour, he won seven doubles titles and reached a career-high doubles ATP ranking #1 with Mark Knowles. His singles ATP ranking was #126.

He has plenty of accomplishments from his playing career, but he is most proud of his durability on tour.

TxDOT restriping, repaving on RM 620/RM 2222 – Expect delays Monday, July 23

Texas Department of Transportation has two projects going on in Four Points right now that are impacting drivers.

TxDOT is restriping and adding delineators on RM 2222.

Plans call for the westbound lanes from approximately the Wells Fargo Bank building to RM 620 to be restriped starting at 9 a.m. on Monday, July 23. This will allow longer cue lines for drivers turning onto RM 620, improving mobility and enhancing safety, according to TxDOT. Continue reading

River Place Rapids post record-setting season

The River Place Rapids swim team completed its 2018 season at the All Star Invitational Meet at Westwood Country Club on June 25. Forty-one swimmers participated in the event, in either an individual event or as part of a relay.

The Rapids team — with 109 swimmers ages 4 to 13 — had its overall highest finish since at least 2014, and multiple records were broken during the season and at the All Star meet.
