District 6’s Flannigan reflects on ‘crazy, crazy year’

Council Member Jimmy Flannigan believes City Council had a lot more to deal with in 2018 than it should have.

Council welcomed a new city manager, found new chiefs for the police and fire departments, engaged in an extended dispute with the police union over oversight and pay, and tried and failed to overhaul the city’s land development code.

“It was a crazy, crazy year,” he said during an interview in his City Hall office.

VHS shares holiday cheer in many languages with RPE

Elementary to meet students who, like them, are from other countries.

Some 20 Vandegrift students, who are from all over the world, brought holiday cheer to about 20 students at River Place Elementary, who are also from other countries.

“The purpose of the trip was to spread cheer and to build relationships,” said Nazarene, the English as a Second Language teacher at VHS who organized the event.  

Viper students originally from China, Italy, Japan, Russia, Ukraine, Nicaragua, Puerto Rico, Taiwan, El Salvador, Guatemala, Spain, Venezuela and Mexico – connected with RPE students while singing versions of “Jingle Bells” and “Feliz Navidad” accompanied by guitar. Then Nazarene and some Vipers sang “Mary Did You Know”.

Vandegrift Viper band performs its Winter Concert

The Vandegrift band performed its Winter Concert featuring all concert bands:

Concert Band Two, Concert Band One  Symphonic Winds, and Wind Ensemble.

Under the direction of Mike Howard, director of bands, the concert was held on Dec. 13 at Austin Baptist Church.

Local designer opens the Skull & Crown boutique

Local designer David Hawkins with his three children, Wyatt, Ruby and Jesse, opened The Skull & Crown this month. The boutique is located around the corner from Mansfield Dam toward Lakeway and offers a host of sought-after brands.

David Hawkins a former designer to Hollywood stars who lives in Steiner Ranch opened a new clothing and lifestyle store nearby called The Skull & Crown.

Hawkins designed clothes for his G.I. Joe when he was very young, after becoming frustrated that the action figure only had one outfit. Now, he is making a dream come true by opening his own shop.

Hawkins, who moved to Austin from Los Angeles 14 years ago, has designed clothes for a host of entertainment stars including Jamie Foxx, Rod Stewart, Harrison Ford, Helen Hunt, Vanessa Williams, and the cast of “Friends”.
