FFA veterinary science team places 8th at nationals

The Vandegrift veterinary science team placed eighth on Oct. 26 at the 91st annual FFA convention in Indianapolis, Ind. The team, consisting of seniors Camille Barkhuizen and Zach Roush as well as juniors Madeline Rawlings and Lauren Stevens.

“We had high hopes, and we had some pretty big shoes to fill because Texas is known to place in the top 10,” Rawlings said. “[We had to compete against] 1,600 teams alone in Texas [to get to nationals], so with 50 states, it is a really huge thing. It was very jaw-dropping, relieving and emotionally fulfilling.”

Gas leak affects Steiner

On Oct. 30, a contractor hit a gas line trying to even out the road on Golden Gate Park in Steiner Ranch and the accident displaced families for days.

Some 15 households were evacuated on Tuesday and could not go back into their homes.

The families had to pack quickly including Halloween costumes. They were told by Texas Gas Service to keep their receipts for reimbursements.About eight families stayed in the Residence Inn and some at the Lakeway Holiday Inn.

Mansfield Dam floodgates open until possibly mid November

Lake Travis, Lake Austin affected

The last of the four Mansfield Dam floodgates will be closed around Nov. 7 or so as the Lower Colorado River Authority manages floodwaters in the system of lakes feeding into Lake Travis.

“Based on current circumstances, the floodgates will be open until early to mid November,” said Phil Wilson, LCRA general manager, last weekend. 

The historic flooding event has impacted the Four Points area which is home to Lake Travis and Lake Austin. Both lakes have been closed since the flooding began.
