Vandegrift football heads to state championship for first time

Vandegrift’s Hayden Arnold hit a 37-yard field goal as time expired to give the Vipers a 38-35 win over nine-time state champion Katy on December 10 at the Alamodome in San Antonio. For the first time in school history, the Vipers will face off against DeSoto in the Class 6A-DII state title game Saturday at 3 p.m. at AT&T Stadium in Arlington. “We are very excited to accomplish something that no Vandegrift team has ever done and reach our first state championship game,” said Drew Sanders, VHS head football coach. “I thought our effort against Katy was one of the all-time best efforts from a Vandegrift football team ever and I was thrilled with how hard our team played and the amount of high level execution. And what an amazing kick by Hayden Arnold to win the game.” Looking ahead to the game against DeSoto on Saturday, Sanders is preparing for the challenge. “They are a unbelievably fast and athletic team. They have multiple four- and five- star players on their team and will be a great challenge for the Vipers. But we are excited and ready for the challenge. To win a state title, you’ve got to be able to beat really good teams.” Photo by Natalie Chilton, Black Diamond Photos
