Former VHS student plays basketball for Longhorns

Persistence has gotten Drayton Whiteside where he is today. The Steiner Ranch product and Vandegrift grad didn’t give up and this season earned a spot on the University of Texas men’s basketball team.  

“Growing up I had always watched Texas basketball and dreamt about having a Texas locker and playing in the Erwin Center. And now I get to do it,” Whiteside said.

2222 at 360 getting major overhaul to improve traffic

Traffic is expected to flow better in the Four Points area after the Texas Department of Transportation spends more than $37 million to overhaul the intersection of RM 2222 and Loop 360 to create a diverging diamond.

In addition, a new underpass at nearby Courtyard Drive near the Pennybacker Bridge will go in and the signal lights removed.

“Construction is expected to begin mid-2023,” said Brad Wheelis, a TxDOT spokesperson. “Construction is expected to take 2-3 years to complete for the RM  2222/Courtyard Drive project.”

Wet roads, curve, poor tires contribute to fatal RM 620 crash

Weather and tires contributed to the fatal accident that happened on RM 620 between the RM 2222 intersection and Steiner Ranch Boulevard on March 3.

Camron Renae Williams, 21, from Austin died at scene of the two-vehicle accident, and Brian Daniel Cox, 44, from Austin was transported to St. David’s Medical Center Round Rock, according to Robbie Barrera, Texas Highway Patrol sergeant.

Four new options for food & drink in Four Points

As the Four Points area continues to experience a retail construction boom, a number of new dining and beverage options are available for area residents, including Oz. Tap House, Galaxy Cafe, Sloan + Parker and Domino’s Pizza.

Oz. Tap House

At Oz. Tap House, which opened Feb. 1 in the Shops at Riverplace, owners Krista and Sean Kanter offer another kind of service: self-serve beer and wine on tap. Theirs is one of the first tap houses of its kind to open in Texas since the state changed laws allowing customers to pour their own alcohol.

The concept works thanks to technology: customers check in on arrival and provide a credit card, essentially opening a tab attached to an RFID card that charges customers by the ounce for whatever they serve themselves. “You only pay for what you pour,” explained Krista.
