The Steiner Ranch Neighborhood Association May 8 meeting in Steiner Ranch had 30 or so in attendance. Much of the focus of the open forum meeting was about RM 620 North and how it was left out of the latest round of CAMPO funding.

CAMPO fails to fund fixes now,  SRNA talks next steps

Several key meetings last week with local, area and state leaders shed light on proposed funding and fixes along RM 620 North — past, present and future. Residents shared during the comment periods, asking questions and urging relief to traffic congestion.

The Capital Area Metropolitan Planning Organization (CAMPO) met on May 7 and failed to pass any additional funding for the northern section of RM 620, as projected.

Local mom leaves lasting impressions

Local mother-of-four Heidy Arteaga, who was expecting her fifth child, passed away last week, several weeks before her 41st birthday.

Born May 22, 1977 Heidy Elizabeth Casares Arteaga unexpectedly died along with her unborn daughter, Chloe Nicole Arteaga, on May 7, from complications from a respiratory infection. She was about 23 weeks along in her pregnancy.

Heidy is survived by her adoring husband of eight years, Anthony Arteaga, and their son, Grayson, 7, a 1st grader at Grandview Hills Elementary.

Vandegrift tennis sends seven to state

Seven Vandegrift tennis players will compete in the 6A state championship tournament on this week, May 17-18 at Texas A&M University.

“The team has exceeded my expectations by advancing seven players to state,” said Daniel White, VHS head tennis coach.

Talking with teens event helps parents

Vandegrift PTSA Healthy Lifestyles committee member and licensed professional counselor Shelley Coleman presented “Communicating with your Teen” at a brown bag lunch at VHS earlier this year.

“Communicating with your Teen” was the topic of a presentation earlier this year hosted by the Vandegrift Parent Teacher Student Association Healthy Lifestyles committee, which focuses on student health and wellness.

The talk was lead by Shelley Coleman, committee member and licensed professional counselor. She spoke to an eager audience of parents and opened with a promise — and a caveat. “You are going to learn the secret (of communicating with your teen): there is no secret.”

Coleman first explained to parents what they could expect from their teens developmentally.

“Emotionally they are separating from us as parents. They’re beginning to distance themselves from us. Their friends are more important than we are,” she said.
