Cheer places 1st for fight song, 4th overall at state
Vandegrift cheerleaders placed 4th out of 22 teams in the coed division at the 2019 UIL competition in Fort Worth in mid January. The Vipers also placed 1st overall in the fight song category.

The Vandegrift cheer team placed 4th out of 22 teams in the coed division at the 2019 state UIL competition in Fort Worth on Jan. 17. The Vipers also placed 1st overall in the fight song category.
The Vipers changed their strategy this year and competed in the coed division for the first time after adding four boys to their roster in November. The plan worked.
“We have been 6A for the past few years and, even though we had been doing really well, our results weren’t very reflective of the talent that we had, so we thought that changing our divisions would be able to showcase our skills better and have a higher probability of winning a state championship,” said Brianna Roughton, VHS head cheer coach.
LISD makes national honor roll

Leander ISD is one of 373 school districts in the U.S. and Canada being honored by the College Board with placement on the Ninth Annual AP District Honor Roll. In order to receive the recognition, the district had to, since 2016, increase the number of students participating in AP while also increasing or maintaining the percentage of students earning AP Exam scores of 3 or higher.
In a release, the district said, “Reaching these goals shows that LISD is successfully identifying motivated, academically prepared students who are ready for AP.”
2018 VHS grad has 10,000 reasons to celebrate
William Bryan’s (left) birth date and place earned him $10,000 for college, which he is using at Texas A&M University as a freshman engineering student.

Vandegrift 2018 graduate William Bryan turned 19 on New Year’s, and it was the special day of his arrival in 2000 that is now paying off. His Jan. 1 birth date has given him $10,000 toward college expenses, which he is using at Texas A&M University.
Born at 10:30 a.m. on Jan. 1, 2000, William was rewarded $10,000 toward college as the first child born in 2000 at The Medical Center at Bowling Green.
“The scholarship has been a huge help as it will pay for most of his first year of tuition,” said Keri Bryan, William’s mom.
