Another body recovered in Lake Travis

LT searches are challenging

Search and recovery operations are difficult in most lakes but Lake Travis adds its own set of challenges. Case in point is this summer season where the popular lake has had five swimmers reported missing, and so far three bodies have been recovered.

The most recent presumed accidental drowning on Lake Travis happened on July 28. Luke Fashaw, 36 of San Antonio, was swimming and had gone under water and not resurfaced near Devil’s Hollow, said Kristen Dark, Travis County Sheriff’s Office spokesperson.

County invites feedback for Steiner evacuation route design

Road could be finished by late 2020

Travis County is hosting an open house this week to update the community on the proposed emergency evacuation route out of the Steiner Ranch area. Community feedback is welcomed at the event which will be held Aug. 9 at 6 p.m. – 8 p.m. at Canyon Ridge Middle School.

“The open house will be an opportunity for local residents to learn more about the study and look at maps and give their input and suggestions on alternate approaches for providing possible emergency access out of the Steiner Ranch neighborhood during an evacuation scenario,” said David Greear, Travis County Transportation and Natural Resources engineering division manager.

“There is a possibility to affect surrounding communities as well and we are hoping to get community input from all who may be affected,” Greear said.

Family warns of danger to pedestrians on 2nd anniversary of son’s death

On the first anniversary of her son Alexei’s death, Anna Bauereis posted a message on Facebook asking if anyone would like to come by the house and share their memories of her son. She remembers telling her husband that she was worried she would spend the day sitting alone in her front yard.

Instead, by 6 p.m,, “There were two six foot tables full of food and over 75 people in our front yard,” she recalls.

Now on the second anniversary of her son’s death, Anna and her husband Eric are on a mission to make sure that no one else has to go through what their family went through. The family, along with their older daughter Anastasia, currently lives in North Austin after moving from River Place in 2013.

LISD longtimer Dr. Ciccarelli retires from FPMS

For the past eight years, Joe Ciccarelli has enthusiastically led Four Points Middle School to achieve much success in a short time. He announced his retirement as FPMS principal a few months ago.

Ciccarelli earned his bachelor’s degree from the University of Texas at Austin, and his master’s degree and doctorate from Texas State University.

He has witnessed first hand the explosive growth at Leander ISD, and now after more than three decades in education, Ciccarelli plans to shift roles and stay involved in the profession he is so passionate about. Continue reading
